  Are the artefacts always red? In Galaxy Zoo they are sometimes blue or green as well as red.

  All of the ones I've seen so far are red. Depending on the color mapping used, that would make sense. I don't off the top of my head though.

  GZ has a kind of unique approach.

  Actually, the images in the Milky Way project were all produced using a varient on the algorithm set out in that paper, which specialises in showing both faint and bright features at once. That doesn't help with understanding why all artefacts are red, though.

  OK found a bug. The artefact is on the right edge of the picture - which is cut off when used in a post.

  #AMW00013vc there is a star on middle right (cant miss it) and there is a black spot in the middle of that. I was just thinking what might cause that, a property of the way the pictures taken or the equipment.
