I am so impressed with this project, its scope and functional simplicity. I'm an astronomical illustrator, so I have been looking at nebula and galactic zoo for 40 years and before that. I will have to spend some time here helping out. It inspires my creative wonder. Sorry I missed everyone, but I am a night person on the Pacific coast, who only feels good after astronomical twilight. :^)

Caro,
Are you a Starship Captain this time? (In joke - Caro is working on the Royal Navy logs in the Old Weather project). Any idea how many images there are in this collection - 1 degree wide along a portion of the Galaxy's equator as I understand it? And will there be any obvious outputs to see how people are doing? Have to say how amazing it is that in most cases, we are identifying images no one on Earth has ever seen before!!

Hi All,
Loving the imagery on this project - it's a fabulous dataset to look at and has given me the chance to spot Nebulae, Star Clusters and Galaxies in deep field images - I'm really enjoying it, and if I happen to provide some useful data for the real scientists while I'm at it - well then everyone is a winner hey?! 😉
Posted
-
by dbhume
why can't a computer do this better?
Posted
-
I don't think a computer can be as perceptive as you or I when we look at these images, we may see a variety of different bubble structures, I've seen red and green bubbles - and "inverse" bubbles (where the structure looks like a red or green ball rather than a hole, and at all scales from a fractional arc on an edge of the image to a tiny spot deep in a field of gas, all of these subtleties would be very very difficult to program a computer to detect. But ultimately it's our judgement that gives insight in to these pictures - the computer will give one "answer" - we can give thousands!

I'd like to read about what the colors are. Are they filters identifying certain gases? Are the bright red balls stars between the earth and the image? I can pick out dark nebula. Are the brightest spots, the densest areas so stars may be protostars? They are dust blocking stars behind, right? What are you searching for? Are there identifying features for quasars? I need to know more!!

Hi everyone,
Yesterday while marking bubbles something novel was seen, a fuzzy red object looked very bi-polar, and thought to discuss it with someone who would tell me how to flag it for the pro's in case they wanted a look. After hitting the discuss button the entire picture disappeared to wherever they go without me even finishing labeling tasks on the picture.
Any help on avoiding this?turfflower

I never have found a way to do that. Just make sure you mark everything BEFORE clicking submit or any buttons that take you away from the picture (You can't go back) - and you can't save an image with your markings either (unless you use screen capture on your computer). It would really be nice if you could. Hint-hint.

Couple of questions:

- Bok globules are pretty cold; do they still show as black in these images?

It would be more rewarding, and I think more productive, if we had higher resolution pictures to scrutinize.
~ 40 kb photos? Sorry - I'm not feelin' the nebulae with such a tiny view.
I'll come back and give it another try soon, but I think this will bore me quickly.
My suggestion is to give us megabytes of images, like at the Hubble gallery!Posted

Attention geeks: math is the language of science. our math is based on a positive and negative continuum.this is WRONG. positiveness is merely a resultant of negativeness acting upon ITSELF. I believe the universe is comprised of NOTHINGNESS and some form of negative energy being drawn into the void. Then positive aspects and mass coagulate.if you develop a new math based on these concepts you will understand everything from the big bang to black holes and the expanding universe.Good luck! p.s. Time is also a RESULTANT of mass and energy acting upon each other in the universe and progresses in infintessimally small increments as things change. Wake up Einstein you CAN'T go back in time. (you were using the WRONG MATH).

Hi Someone back there commented that she/he would get very bored with this work. I cannot say the the same thing. I find it very exciting and when I'm outlining nebulae, and yellow balls, red and green fuzzies, I begin to see a rhythm, a pattern to the images that begins to makes sense. I can hardly wait to see what magnificent image will come up on the next panel. This is wonderful work, and I feel very privileged to be able to participate in it. Understanding comes slowly, but the "Spitzer space telescope" link and the NASA app on the iPad are very informative. I just wish that someone would answer some of my "What is that????"questions, like the one about the "red hornets nest" image that pops up some times.

Hi ! I know it might sound silly, but i'm new to the this one, and i still have trouble trying to figure out what are the bubbles, is it the empty round hole in a cloud, or the bright bunch of dust and stars , or the crown of dust around a hole in the dust , bright or dull, ... if there is a better tutorial than the 4 pics from the menu i haven't found it yet, .... thanks
Posted
-
by JCoop
Hi ci.el.o, if you are on the "classify" screen, at the top right of the image is "menu". click on that and you see a list of options. One of the options is "classify" and right next to it is the word, "Guide". Click on that. There are more images there that will help you figure things out. Good luck!
