Bow Shocks and Pillars

I'm having some confusion on what a bow shock or a pillar is, the tutorial doesn't point them out and I can't see what they are. Can anybody post me examples and explain exactly what makes a bow shock or a pillar?

If you click on "Menu", you get a list of options. Click on the "Guide" button just to the right of "Classify". There are more examples of objects there that can help you figure out what you're looking at.
