My Galaxy is overloaded -- HELP!!!!

Clicking on My Galaxy brings me to crashing thump. It's acting like there are so many objects it's trying to load into one screen that it never gets finished -- and trying to interrupt the process or stop the import just makes it worse. I end up having to reboot.
It got worse gradually. The stage where the thumbnails have info after them got slower and slower. Then the stage of long strings of thumbnails got slower and slower, and I never got to the slideshow. Now it just hangs.
My systems engineering days are behind me, but this feels like a case where the quantity of data being downloaded is well beyond the amount imagined by the creators of the page -- it has no stopping point.
