what is the green "thing" near the red star in the centre of the image? It appears to be connected to the star by a thin line.

it's a green knot. The red star is a planetary nebula.

Strange beam, looks like a flare. Is it possible were getting a kind of flare effect from the instrumentation/lens. Zoom in and it pixelates
