The Cosmic Peanut - NGC 7354

... or star cluster, or planetary nebula, or something else. Just starting a discussion to keep track of this one. We have the usual ring of dust and gas but it's the very big, bright overexposed centre that has everyone puzzled.

I think it's NGC 7354, a planetary nebula. Found it via Milkman - although when I tried before it didn't come up. :\ See what you think. Here's the Simbad link. The stars match and the coordinates are right. Go to the interactive AladinLite viewer for a wider look.
This is Hubble's view (via Wikipedia):

here is another wide field shot, in the lower right corner: http://talk.milkywayproject.org/#/subjects/AMW00035ek
and here you may have another similar object: http://talk.milkywayproject.org/#/subjects/AMW00002hk

I think the Hubble image used different wavelengths which would account for the difference in appearance. Here's an image which looks a bit more like ours (scroll down a bit). You can see that the stars match up too though the infrared images are confusing at times. The link you posted to a wide-field shot shows a different part of the Milky Way (I checked the coordinates on Milkman). So NGC 7354 is still my best guess - though I'm quite prepared to be wrong! ๐ It's definitely an odd looking thing. I'll ask again if someone from the team can take a look.
And I think you're right about the similar object you linked to.

It most certainly is NGC 7354. Nice catch! I used this link to compare the nearby stars.
